Sex racket busted, eight girls rescued

MumbaiThe Social Service (SS) branch of the Mumbai Police rescued eight girls from a prostitution racket operating at a bar in Andheri (East) early on Friday. On a tip-off, a team comprising SS branch officers and Andheri police raided the premises.

Officers also arrested five persons, including the manager and waiters of the establishment, and have seized Rs 1.25 lakh. Assistant Commissioner of Police (SS Branch) Vasant Dhobale said the raid was conducted at Ratna Park Bar & Restaurant on Sahar Road.

“We raided the place around 11.30 pm on Thursday. However, we did not find any girls then,” said Dhobale. While searching the premises, officers found concealed doors made of cement and iron.

“We had to break open the doors. It took us around three hours. We rescued the girls around 3.30 am on Friday,” said Dhobale.

Officers arrested the manager, waiters and another person who allegedly helped hide the girls. “The five arrested have been booked under the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act. A case has been registered at Andheri police station. Further investigations are on,” said Dhobale.

The police are now trying to verify if any of the girls rescued are minors. “They will be sent for medical tests. If they are found to be minors, stringent action will be taken against the arrested,” said Dhobale.
