The Crime Branch of Delhi Police has rescued 13 minors – 12 girls and one boy -who were brought to Delhi from Jharkhand, probably to work as domestic helps in the Delhi and national capital region (NCR). The rescue operation was conducted with the help of an NGO – Shakti Vahini. Police said the minors were brought by Jharkhand Sampark Kranti Express train.

“After receiving a complaint from the NGO, we placed our men at strategic locations at New Delhi Railway Station. Around 9.30 pm on Friday, the train arrived and the 12 girls and one boy were rescued,” Pramod Kushwaha, additional deputy commissioner of police (crime) said. Police have also arrested four persons who reportedly lured these children. The arrested persons have been identified as Sunita Devi, Manish Munda, Sanjay Bha and Munna Munda, all natives of Jharkhand. “We are verifying the details of arrested persons with the local police to check whether they have any previous record. The chain of events is not clear yet as the accused are changing their statements frequently,” Kushwaha added.

The children were sent to child shelters where counsellors are taking care of them. “Normally in trafficking cases, minors tend to say things they were told by traffickers. Currently none of them has been able to tell us why they were brought to Delhi. Counsellors are talking to them and after proper counselling they will be able to record their statements,” a senior police officer said. Police have also called the parents of the minors. “We are not sure whether the parents are aware of it or not. Previously, the traffickers used to misguide parents and take away children saying they will get them job in Delhi. After bringing them to Delhi, no amount was paid to parents,” the officer added.

In the past, Crime Branch along with Shakti Vahini NGO has rescued children who were illegally brought to Delhi to work as domestic help. “In many cases we have rescued children from people’s house. We call parents to verify the sequence of events in trafficking cases,” the officer added. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
