Two women held with kids, cops suspect trafficking

The Government Railway Police (GRP) are investigating a case of possible child trafficking at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) following the arrest of two women this weekend.

Investigators said the women were unable to prove their relationship with the infants found with each. Sheetal Chauhan (25) and Reena Sammer Beda (38), residents of Kamathipura, were arrested on Saturday and remanded in police custody till September 9.

GRP officers said Sheetal had sold Reena a baby boy for Rs 5,000 and have charged them under Sections 363, 368, 109 of the Indian Penal Code.

While Sheetal said the baby girl was her child, Reena — who claimed to have three other children — allegedly admitted she had purchased the boy.

The incident came to light when a police constable spotted a woman identified as Sushila sobbing at CST last week. Hailing from Jhansi, she said her elder sister took away her baby boy. The police checked the CCTV footage and found she did have a baby with her. They also spotted a boy, who looked like her child, being carried by a woman hurriedly boarding a local train bound for Badlapur.

“We alerted our staff and searched every station up to Badlapur to locate the woman, but to no avail,” said B A Thombre, Assistant Commissioner of Police, GRP.

On Monday, constable Manisha Badal Ingle saw a woman sitting with a child near the Baba Bismillah Dargah outside CST. “As the woman’s description was fresh in her mind, Ingle questioned her. She turned out to be Sheetal, who first claimed that the baby with her was a girl while the missing child was a boy. She later confessed to have sold the boy to Reena at Kamathipura for Rs 5,000,” said inspector Ashok Kumar. Later, Reema was tracked down and arrested.
