CHANDIGARH: Police have arrested two persons, including a helper with Punjab Co-operative Federation, for human trafficking and rescued five children from their possession on Friday night.
Chandigarh police have also decided to prepare a detailed list of residents in Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali, who used to hire these children as domestic help from accused.
Arrested persons included helper and owner of Jai Johar Enterprises Company, Janak Raj, and his agent Mithun. Both accused are natives of Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal and currently residing in Kishangarh village in Chandigarh. The recovered minor children include two girls and three boys.
SP (operations) Rajinder Singh Ghumman said, “During interrogation, Mithun disclosed that on Janak’s orders, he used to procure children from West Bengal in exchange for Rs 500. And it has also come out that money is not given to children where they work as servant, but is taken by Janak Raj and he send the money to their parents of children. But this is yet to verified.”
Police officials said efforts are being made to rescue and recover more children following the interrogation of accused Janak and Mithun.
This is the second time when Chandigarh police busted a gang involved in human trafficking during the past six months in Chandigarh. In July, 2011, two persons from Bihar were arrested and a total 16 children were rescued from Chandigarh and various parts of Himachal.
